The 4-Year Downturn

For four years (from 2021-2025), my business growth curve looked like this:

By all financial metrics, I was in a downturn. I went from 100 clients to about 65. Most of the drop off was due to natural attrition in a high ticket program, or people shutting down their businesses.

The entire market saw a contraction and my clients and I were not exempt.

I also had turned down the "find new clients" knob to near zero. The lack of marketing I was doing made it impossible for me to beat the normal churn curve.

So why did I stop looking for new clients? There are several reasons.

Personal stress: 2022-2023 were some of the most stressful of my life. I figured it was better to use my energy serving the clients I had, then looking for new ones. People continued to find me and work with me, but I wasn't doing anything I was supposed to... ads, webinars, networking at events.

Growth at Funnel Gorgeous: Since I was co-founder over there, I was putting energy into stabilizing and growing that company.

A lack of financial drive: 2017-2021 had been NUTS in terms of my working hours as well as my income. I had so much financial cushion the feeling of "omg I need money now" was gone. Even with a horrific divorce, I didn't "need" money like in the past.

New relationship: I was focused on a new relationship (and blending our families) and that takes a lot of intentional time.

So why am I telling you all this?

Because this morning a very successful client of mine checked in on Voxer to give me an update and she said, "I did some stuff, but nothing is moving the needle really."

She's in a season right now like the one I was in.

And it's so easy to think it's permanent, you've got to snap yourself out of it, you've lost relevancy and momentum, it's all downhill from here.

Well I'm here to tell you that's a lie.

In the next few weeks, I will be back at 100 clients, I will need to start a waitlist, and running a completely full mastermind similar to 2021.

One of the things I got really good at in those four years?

I just kept swimming.

  • Keep coaching.
  • Keep putting out content.
  • Keep trying new things.
  • Keep serving the people who find me.
  • Just keep going and don't quit

I didn't let my revenue curve determine my worth.. and here's the important part...

I didn't let it determine whether or not my business was successful.

....

....

I'm letting that sentence breathe because many of you can say "Yea I know I'm still worth it even if my business fails" but I think a MUCH smaller fraction of you could say "Yeah my business is still successful even though I'm losing revenue and not making any profit."

When the Instagram algorithm gods and Jessi Jean's shoutout aligned a few weeks ago and I found myself with 6000+ new followers overnight, they came into my world where I was.

  • And I was present.
  • There.
  • Doing my thing.
  • Not ghosted from social media or taking 750 pivots.
  • Not confusing the heck out of my audience with 7000 new directions.

Just ... steady. There.

I cannot tell you how many people said "I found your account, and proceeded to binge everything I could. Your book. Your reels. Your podcast. Everything."

The new clients I have today weren't just because of the shout out (though that was the match for SURE).

The new clients came because when that fire was lit, I had kindling everywhere.

I hope that stirs hope in you today.

xx Julie
