The Simplicity Lie....

And to be fair (before I get into this), I think I've fallen prey to the lie too.

Simplicity in business - everyone wants it, but no one wants to do what's necessary to get it. Partly because they think simplicity means one thing, over and over. And in part, it does.

But that's not the whole picture.

🎙️I chatted about this to myself on my podcast Million Dollar Grit.🎙️
You can listen on
Apple, Spotify, or any web browser.

I set about to unpack what does simplicity in business actually mean, and I landed on these three core questions.

  1. Can you correctly identify where 60% + of your revenue is coming from? This is your core economic engine and everything should help stabilize and grow this.
  2. Do you know what activities you must do to drive that revenue in that engine? Ads, social media, outreach, etc.
  3. Do you know what lever you're pulling THIS quarter to get those activities in motion?

If you can't answer these three questions, you don't have simplicity activated in your business. BUT... there are two possibilities as to why.

Possibility #1 - You're in an experimentation phase of your business (it's new, you don't have a valid offer yet), and that messy try-everything-and-see-what-sticks is part of the process. This is normal at the beginning, and you want to leave this phase as quickly as possible!

Possibility #2 - You are unwilling to transition out of that experimentation phase because you don't like the idea of simplicity and focus because your nervous system thinks it's dangerous. So you stay busy but scattered.

Honestly once you get a handle on this, business work fundamentally changes. And I see it in my clients every day. I had a hotseat with a client yesterday. And it's very normal for this client to want to plan out launches, promotions, activities, etc. But yesterday, it turned out her marching orders were quite simple. She knew the economic engine that was driving 60% of her revenue. She knew the activities she needed to do, and her levers were very cut and dry. And honestly you guys? Not too much work.

If this is something that you struggle with, I'd love to help. Please reply to this email and we'll talk!
